Russian contest looks for ways to revive economy

[Presenter] Over 700,000 Russian enterprises went bankrupt in 2001. About 60,000 bankruptcies have been officially registered and just one per cent of them managed to restore solvency after court proceedings.
The diagnosis experts have said that the Russian economy requires urgent measures. The search for them is under way at the Zolotoy Rubl [Russ: Golden rouble] - the All-Russian contest for the financial revival of the Russian economy.
[Correspondent] These awards shows the rouble not to be "wooden" but made of high quality metal and they have been handed out for finding successful ways out of critical situations...
The most impressive were the results of Krasnodar Territory which became one of the seven laureates "The best constituent part of the Russian Federation in 2001". In spite of all the floods, droughts and other disasters the territory has survived and holds third place in Russia considering the investments already made. The territory's governor puts this down not only to the geographical situation and fertile soil...
[Krasnodar Territory governor Aleksandr Tkachev] The investment climate itself, which consists of the local law on attracting investment and advantageous conditions for both Russian and western investors, and a team of young managers as well as directors have contributed to this...
[Correspondent] The jury has selected the winner taking into account specific economic data but there are other important criteria for selecting leaders.
[Yevgeniy Primakov, the president of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, captioned] I think that initiative is important, this is the first criterion, as general conditions are difficult everywhere..
