I came across a saying once which went something like this: 'When Russians have had enough of Russia, they either head to the West, or to the forest'. I've been hearing more and more about a writer called Vladimir Megre who has written a series of eight (I think already) books about a young woman, Anastasia, who lives in the Siberian taiga and who has some strong views. According to some of his followers, Megre has sold at least six million books so far, not counting a probably much higher readership of his books, given the Russian tendency to sharing. After trawling the web, I see he has followers in Germany too.
From what I hear there are moves afoot by his devotees to set up what I understand to be 'eco-settlements' where families of like mind, regardless of background, religion etc, will set up smallholdings of one hectare or so each and live according the philosophies expounded in his books. I have read the first book in English - the only one to be translated so far - which has led me to conclude that he/Anastasia advocates a very much environmentall-oriented way of life which, I guess, is gaining in appeal from disaffected city dwellers.
The first book was written in 1994 and annual conferences have been held since then which seek to discuss and further the way of life propounded in the series.
I would be interested to hear if any of your readers have heard of this author and his series and whether they can further enlighten me on their significance among the populace.
kind regards
