ITAR-TASS

St Petersburg, 8 January: A member of the Soviet Communist Party Politburo and a Secretary of its Central Committee [in charge of heavy and defence industry] in 1985-90, Lev Zaykov, died in St Petersburg at 78 on 7 January.

Zaykov worked for many years at a plant in Leningrad [now St Petersburg], where he rose from an engineer to a general director. In late 1970s he became chairman of the executive committee of the Leningrad City Soviet [head of the city administration], then first secretary of the Leningrad party committee.

Zaykov was a party boss of Moscow for two years [he replaced Boris Yeltsin who was sacked after a conflict with Mikhail Gorbachev in autumn 1987].
