Public Chamber to Examine Provision of Medical Aid to People Held At Detention Facilities

MOSCOW. Nov 24 (Interfax) - The Russian Public Chamber plans to examine the provision of medical aid to people held at pretrial detention centers.

"In the wake of a tragic incident, the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky at the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center, the Public Chamber's commission monitoring the law enforcement agencies is beginning an inquiry into the provision of professional medical aid to the people held at pretrial detention centers as suspects and defendants," Anatoly Kucherena, the commission's head, told Interfax on Tuesday.

The commission has received complaints from Magnitsky's relatives, which it is studying now, Kucherena said. "If it turns out that applications for medical aid and health complaints were earlier submitted to the investigator and no measures were taken, the investigator must be held personally responsible for the defendant's death," he said.
