Georgia to Send Servicemen to Afghanistan

TBILISI. June 23 (Interfax) - The Georgian Defense Ministry has confirmed reports circulated in Washington on Monday that it is sending 500 servicemen to Afghanistan.

"A company of Georgian military personnel will be sent to Afghanistan this year to participate in the counterterrorist operation. During 2010, another formation of Georgian servicemen will fly there, bringing the total size of the Georgian military contingent to 500 servicemen," Interfax was told at the Georgian Defense Ministry on Tuesday.

"The overwhelming majority of the Georgian servicemen directed to Afghanistan have served in Iraq," the ministry said.
