Politkovskaya's Murder Case Makes Progress - Novaya Gazeta Editor-in- Chief

MOSCOW. May 12 (Interfax) - Editor-in-chief of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper Dmitry Muratov believes that investigators of Anna Politkovskaya's murder are on the right track.

"The fact that the Investigative Committee has declared Rustam Makhmudov for the first time as the suspected executor of Anna Stepanovna's murder is not news for our editorial staff. We think that the Investigative Committee is on the right track," he told Interfax on Monday.

"Other news related to this case may be coming soon. For one, persons now being held as suspects may be released and criminal charges against them may be dropped," Muratov said.

"Besides, we assume that this man (R. Makhmudov) is now abroad and the search for him is complicated by previous leaks of information in this case," he said.

Assessing the course of the investigation of Politkovskaya's murder, Muratov said that "truly virtuoso moves" were taken in recent months.

Politkovskaya was shot dead on the stairwell of her apartment building in central Moscow on October 7, 2006.
