Russia needs a strong army to address current challenges - top general

MOSCOW, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia must have a strong army capable of meeting current challenges, or it could end up paying a high price for neglecting its security, the chief of the General Staff said Monday.

"Global developments require [Russia] to maintain high levels of technical backup to ensure the combat readiness of its Armed Forces,'" Army General Yury Baluyevsky said.

Baluyevsky told a meeting with WWII veterans on the eve on Victory Day that recent attempts to revise opinions on the outcome of WWII are often unconstructive, deny history, and mislead Russia's population.

"Loud campaigns launched by some research institutions are disorienting our society," he said. "Neglect of a country's security is paid for at an enormously high price."
