RUSSIAN FEDERATION COUNCIL SPEAKER DENOUNCES GEORGIA-US MILITARY TREATY

VLADIKAVKAZ, May 1, RIA Novosti - The Speaker of the Federation Council (the Upper House of Russian Parliament), Sergei Mironov, has qualified as unprecedented the military treaty between Georgia and the United States. He said this at a news conference after meeting members of parliament of the Republic of North Ossetia. According to him, it is a sovereign right of every state to conclude treaties with other countries. However, if this concerns Russia's borders and "unprecedented privileges" for American specialists on Georgian soil, this cannot but worry Russia.

The Federation Council Speaker proposed to make this treaty "a mirror-like" one, i.e. all the privileges and "special signs of attention granted by the Georgian side to American military specialists" should be spread to Russian servicemen as well.

"We do not encroach on Georgia's sovereignty, but we are partners in the CIS and have the right to ask what is going on in Georgia," underscored Mironov.
