Controversial Hollywood film to be released in Russia
MOSCOW. July 18 (Interfax) - A new film about the tragic events on the Soviet
nuclear-powered submarine K-19 will be released worldwide on July 19 and in
Russia on July 26, the Russian company distributing it told Interfax on
Thursday.
"K-19: The Widowmaker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow presents the
story of a nuclear reactor accident on the K-19 on July 4, 1961.
The action centers around a confrontation between the submarine's captain
(Harrison Ford) and his first mate (Liam Neeson) during a disaster that could
trigger a world war. The crew who try to cool the reactor are exposed to
radiation and some of them die.
Russian sailors referred to the submarine as Hiroshima because of its bad
luck. Following the 1961 disaster it collided with a U.S. submarine in 1969 and
a fire broke out on board. In the course of the 1961 disaster, 42 crewmen who
were installing a cooling system for the reactor were exposed to high radiation
and eight of them died.
