| In Günter Verheugen’s speech to the International Space Conference, held in Brussels on Feb. 17, 2005, this vice-president of the European Commission pointed out the importance of space for Europe. He also announced that a special European Commission on space recently suggested “the establishment in 2005 of a platform for consolidating the security related user needs for space across different user categories; the securing of interoperability between current space systems in Europe in the fields of earth observation and communication; and the implementation of projects in, for example, the area of space surveillance.(PDF) |

The UCS report concludes that the reliability of the source of information on the program is in question, which casts strong doubts on the credibility of the claim. |

| A new report of a Dwight D. Eisenhower National Security Series workshop held in February 2004 and co-sponsored with The Eisenhower Institute in now available online. The report entitled U.S. Space Operations in the International Context by Jeffery Lewis, features a presentation by CDI Vice President Theresa Hitchens on Commercial Imagery: Benefits and Risks — what Ms. Hitchens sees as “one of the most vexing issues facing national security planners in the space arena.” The conference report can be viewed in its entirety on the "Dwight D. | On Thursday, June 10, the Center for Defense Information, the Monterey Institute's Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Rep. Congressman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, hosted an event entitled "China's Space Program and U.S. Interests." Keynote speakers included Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese, professor, Naval War College, and author of The Chinese Space Program; Dr. Gregory Kulacki, global security analyst and China expert, Union of Concerned Scientists, Cambridge, Mass.; and Dr. Phillip Saunders, senior research fellow, National Defense University Analyst. Speakers reviewed and commented on the technical and political aspects of China's emerging space capabilities and their impact on U.S. interests. Specific topics addressed were manned programs, prospective military capabilities, and possible opportunities for (and/or impediments to) cooperation with the United States.
