The Center for Defense Information’s new project on the relationship between climate change and international security has created a visual demonstration to encourage thinking about the potential security impacts of climate change. It permits users to generate randomized scenarios of conflict linked to climate change and view them on a world map. Written by CDI Research Assistant Todd Fine, it remains an experimental work-in-progress but hopes to encourage outside contribution and generate an accumulation of conflict scenarios that could be used in future wargaming.

In this week’s Senate debate on the defense authorization bill, Iraq, immigration, and other amendments will likely receive the most attention. However, one small but significant provision, which has mostly escaped public scrutiny and was also included in the House version, has the ambitious intent to transform the language the government uses to discuss climate change. CDI Research Assistant Todd Fine explains.

This CNA Corporation report, "National Security and the Threat of Climate Change," found at SecurityAndClimate.cna.org, is compiled with comments from the CNA Military Advisory Board, and includes the geo-strategic implications of climate change, regional impacts, potential impacts on military systems and function, finally concluding with recommendations for helping the DOD to cope with these future issues.
