In a test on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 31, 2010, of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system (GMD), the missile defense system with interceptors based in Alaska and California, the interceptor failed to hit its target. According to a posting on its Vandenberg Air Force Base Web site, the U.S. Air Force reported that both the target and the interceptor seemed to launch properly, but the Sea-based X-band radar (SBX) did not perform as expected.
