      NOTES:

      1. Lockheed Martin announced it was dropping plans to acquire Northrop Grumman in July, 1998 as the result of a decision by the Justice Department to challenge the proposed merger.
      2. Boeing Corporation acquired McDonnell-Douglas in July, 1997.
      3. General Dynamics acquired Bath Ironworks in September, 1995.
      4. General Dynamics acquired National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in November, 1998.
      5. General Dynamics announced its plans to merge with Newport News Shipbuilding in February, 1999. The plans was dropped in April, 1999 due to opposition by the Defense Department.
      6. Newport News's plan to acquire Avondale Industries was approved by the government in February, 1999.
      7. Litton announced its plan to acquire Newport News and Avondale Industries in May, 1999. In June Litton announced that it would drop its plans to acquire Newport News due to DoD opposition but would move forward with plans to acquire Avondale.
