BACKGROUND: As part of its Fiscal Year 2002 budget request, the Defense Department
announced a major restructuring of the Ballistic Missile Defense Office (BMDO). As part of
this reorganization, several programs, including MEADS, Patriot PAC-3 and Navy Area Wide
were transferred to the control of the Army and Navy. Conversely, the Airborne Laser (ABL),
Space-based Laser (SBL) and Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) -Low programs were transferred
from the Air Force to BMDO.
Funding for a range of programs within BMDO were absorbed and redistributed in to five major
areas of research. These are the the Terminal, Midcourse and Boost Segments, the Ballistic
Missile Defense Segment, and Ballistic Missile Defense Sensors.

NOTES: Not
all the systems being funded are shown. The totals
shown are for all BMD programs, not just those listed here.
An * denotes numbers taken from BMDO briefing materials. Because of the reorganization
of the BMDO office, some underlying line items in the official budget materials did not or
no longer exist. It should be noted that in some cases numbers supplied by BMDO have been
inconsistant with those included in official budget documents.
