to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. Its purpose was clear: to shield a wartorn Western Europe against
Soviet military aggression. Despite the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its security alliance, the Warsaw Pact, the now-16
member nations of NATO are looking to expand the alliance eastward.
