he Department of Defense, which controls the largest concentration of intelligence activities: The Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, the new National Imagery and Mapping Agency, and the intelligence staffs of the four military services. Together, these Department of Defense offices consume about 20 of the estimated $30 billion that Congress annually appropriates for US intelligence activities.
