The Non-Proliferation Treaty: Dead at 25?

n July 1st, 1968, 61 representatives of nations from around the world gathered at the United Nations in an attempt to put the nuclear genie back in the bottle. Before leaving, they had signed an historic landmark accord: the Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT. For the first time in history, many nations took a public vow of nuclear chastity, giving up their right for a period of 25 years to possess nuclear weapons.
