Why Is Military Spending Going Up?

t $280 billion, U.S. military spending dwarfs that of any other nation. Yet the White House, the Pentagon, and the Congress are on the verge of increasing military spending by more than $100 billion. At a time when military spending worldwide continues to drop and with no significant threat to U.S. national security, is such a major funding increase necessary?
