Research Staff: Christopher Hellman, Senior Analyst                                                   

            Christopher Hellman is a Senior Research Analyst at the Center for Defense Information. He joined the Center in December 1996.

As a CDI analyst Mr. Hellman covers a range of issues including the military budget and planning; the U.S. Air Force, the presence of U.S. military bases and troops in foreign countries; chemical and biological warfare; the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; the dismantlement and disposal of nuclear and chemical weapons; and the U.S. nuclear weapons complex.

Prior to joining CDI, Mr. Hellman worked for two years as a Policy Analyst for Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), a national membership organization of 20,000 medical professionals and citizens. Mr. Hellman served as PSR's military budget specialist, and was involved in implementing the group's "Abolition 2000" campaign for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Hellman spent ten years on Capitol Hill as a staffer working on national security and foreign policy issues. He is familiar with all aspects of the Congressional legislative and budget processes, and served as an appropriations staffer for a member of the House Military Construction Subcommittee.

Mr. Hellman received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Middlebury College in 1984. He has also taken graduate courses through the National Security Studies Program at Georgetown University.
